Indra is the heavenly and arrogant king. One
day Rishi Durvasa came with an divine gift of a garland in the form of 'Prasad'
after his daily but our King Indra being too arrogant took it from him without having
any gratitude and gave the garland which came as 'Prasad' to his vehicle 'Aravata'
.This idiotic Aravata did not what to do with it and crushed it under his feet.
A stunned and baffled Rishi Durvasa curses him that all heavenly wealth and
happiness will be gone. The passer by Apsara's got worried. One of Apsara Menka
who was close to Narad Muni went and narrated the entire story
in a melodramatic way. The ever knowing Narad Muni laugh aloud and said, dear Devi
don't you know that I am all knower and all rounder roamer who has travelled
all the three worlds. Hmm I know about that and what you do there also Nautanki
Narad saying this Apsara leaves to her paradise without any backward glance. When
she reaches her paradise she finds her paradise and other paradise in darkness
.This darkness was due to Indra's disrespect towards Rishi Durvasa. The other devatas
tried to persuaded Rishi Durvasa to
reduce the power of his curse but all went in vain as he was not going to listen any one of them .Finally all other
devatas along king Indra went Brahma dev
as he felt ashamed and helpless about his power. Brahma dev who was sitting and
doing his meditation looked up and welcome them. He asked regarding their
purpose of their visit. Looking at their pale faces he understands what went
wrong. But he chose to remind silent. Here Narad Muni went to Vaikunta to give
his daily updates to the lord Vishnu. He narrated the entire story as how Rishi
Durvasa came in to give a divine garland as a 'Prasad' to Indra but he did not
accept it very well and that led to the curse given Rishi Durvasa that all the
wealth and happiness of heaven will be lost. This all due to Indra's arrogance
so do something about otherwise there will lot of destruction happening around.
They all told Brahma Dev regarding the
happening .Brahma Dev nodded and said "Dear children I can't do anything
about the curse by Rishi Durvasa but then you can go ask for help lord Vishnu
" .I can't guarantee his help in this matter as Rishi Durvasa is powerful
person whose curse can't averted or be lesson until Rishi was willing to let go.
Feeling dejected they rush to Vaikunta
and they all narrate the happening of the day .Indra who felt ashamed of his power and arrogance surrenders himself at
the feet of lord Vishnu and asks him for forgiveness
the actions .Lord Vishnu smiling
replied to him "I am very happy that you understood faults and surrendered
to me so I will surely help you in this and while doing this task you have to take help of the Auras ". But never ever disrespect any kind person who brings an offering to you like the
way you did with Rishi Durvasa and lord
Vishnu took a form of Kurma to help them churn mandara mountain
by keeping the mountain on his back..Thus Kurma avatar of Lord Vishnu was
revealed to the world.

I often wonder if the Gods presented in the mythologies should actually be called Gods. Like the Indra Dev who is arrogant. Arrogance, anger, greed, jealousy, superiority complexes etc are the attributes which our scriptures instruct humans to shun. Isn't God about love, kindness, peace, power and truth? Nevertheless this story is worthy because it gives a message that no gift is lesser in value, big or small, it is the thought behind the gift that counts most. And one more worldly message is - never mess up with somebody who has the capacity to turn your world upside down.
ReplyDeleteYes I completely agree with your statements Anamika :-) I too used to think like what have mentioned here. But Finally I came to an conclusion that "May be God wants us to take them as example so that we grow wiser rather than be like them."
DeleteHave a pleasant day.

You are so wise in thinking that God wants us to grow wise on the basis of these stories rather than be like them.
DeleteAnamika May be because whenever we face difficulties we either ask him for help to surpass us from this trouble or curse him for giving us such a kind difficulties in our lives. How many times we can blame each other for the difficulties face by a person. As he (God) invincible person. So it better to stop asking him anything .
